History and Reception of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and Religion

In Antiquity and the Middle Ages, there was a permanent interaction between philosophy and religion (Greek-Roman, Christian, and Muslim). In this seminar, students can learn to examine the history of ancient and medieval philosophy, and the history of ancient and medieval religions. Their reception by modern philosophers like Nietzsche can also be addressed, as well as the interaction between the history of religions and the development of philosophical theories about the development and functioning of religions, for example in the work of Franz Cumont. The course allows for an individual focus based upon the research interests of the students.
